Building Klau in the Open, Week 21: A Project I Am Not Showing Yet

The whole week went into a project I've been quietly building for the last six months. It's closely tied to Klau, and it's already in the hands of a real customer, running part of their hauling operation. This week we hit some key milestones. Real users in the system. Real transactions running. Real requests moving through it. The kind of week where you look up at the end and realize you forgot to do anything else.

Rows of cut hay curving across a green field on rolling hills, with oak trees under a clear blue sky

A full week of work.

I'm choosing to keep it under wraps a little longer. The hard part is keeping quiet when I'm this excited and want to show people. Saying too much too soon would do the project a disservice.

I can say what it is in general terms. It's the system I've always wished existed, built on the foundation I've been laying with Klau. A hauler has been in the loop since before the first line of code shipped, so it's my ideas meeting the real needs of an actual hauler.

That's as far as I'll go for now. Going further would be a distraction. First, success with the founding customer. Then the rest of the industry. It will take time, but I'm going to build the next generation of systems for waste. The industry has been running on tools that haven't kept pace, and the people in the trucks and dispatch centers deserve better.

I'm also thinking more about which parts of this I can open source, and how soon. This industry needs shared foundations as much as it needs new products. I'll be open about what I decide to release.

Maybe the most important question: who else would sign up to adopt a system as it's built? It's a different kind of vendor relationship. You get modules as they're ready. You give direct feedback as we go. The new system integrates closely with your existing ERP and replaces functions one at a time where the legacy system doesn't meet your needs. Module by module, on my timeline. If that's the relationship you've been waiting for, I want to hear from you.

Week 21. Still building.
